
The city of Oakland lies just east of San Francisco across the Bay Bridge. Oakland has a rich history dating back to its original inhabitants, the Ohlone Indians. This was followed by Spanish and Mexican settlements, and the city was incorporated in 1852. Oakland is the 6th largest city in California and serves as the major sea port for northern California. Many high profile businesses are headquartered in Oakland including: Kaiser Permanente, The Clorox Co., American President Lines Ltd., and Golden West Financial Corp. Oakland is home to many unique neighborhoods which include trendy shops and cafes along College Avenue in the Rockridge area and tourist attractions in Jack London Square. The city enjoys great proximity to the rest of the Bay Area, as it is just minutes from Berkeley and San Francisco, and provides high speed train service to Oakland and San Francisco airports.
