
The City of Gaithersburg occupies 10 square miles in the heart of Montgomery County, Maryland. The southeastern border of the City lies just 13 miles from the northwestern border of Washington, D.C., and 18.5 miles northwest of the U.S. Capitol Building. It is connected to Frederick and Rockville by Interstate 270, which also connects it with the Capital Beltway.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are headquartered in Gaithersburg. Other major employers in the city include IBM, ACE*COMM, Lockheed Martin, MedImmune, and Sodexho.
Shady Grove Station, the western terminus of the Red Line of the Washington Metro, is located just outside the city limits of Gaithersburg.
