Richmond’s downtown is unique compared to other areas of the city because of its intensive mix of retail, commercial, and residential development. When Richmonders refer to “downtown,” they generally mean the business or governmental center of the city. The city of Richmond operates 31 elementary schools, nine middle schools, and eight high schools, with a cosmopolitan student population of 25,000 students. Popular parks include: Bryan Park whose azalea gardens draw hundreds of visitors each spring; Chimborazo Park, the site of the National Battlefield Park headquarters; and Byrd Park, which features a Fountain Lake, waterfowl on Swan Lake, the Dogwood Dell Amphitheater, the Carillon (World War I Memorial which is used for numerous special events and art shows), tournament-class public tennis courts, a Vita-course exercise trail, and a known gathering place for special events such as the annual New Year's Eve celebration. Another Richmond favorite is Maymont Park, operated by the Maymont Foundation. A petting farm and zoo, acres of lush grounds and exotic gardens make this a popular tourist attraction.
